With all the new types of marketing available in the digital age, you might view email as a bit old hat. While email might be the grandad of digital marketing, it’s still king when it comes to its effectiveness.
Email marketing continues to offer some of the highest conversion rates, the trouble is that you need to know what you’re doing.
We all receive a bazillion emails a day so what makes you think yours is worth opening?
Well, follow our 7 tips and watch your conversions grow!
1. Personalise
Nobody likes to be treated as just another number on a spreadsheet.
Stop sending out mass emails that are generic and sound like they are written by soulless AI software. Inject some personalisation into your emails. You want to make the reader feel like you’re writing personally to them.
Encourage some conversation with your audience so that they are more enticed to send a reply. And get away from the corporate sounding tone, use words that you would use if you were talking to them face to face.
2. Use Storytelling
Who doesn’t love a good story, eh?
Storytelling can allow you to engage your audience and get them invested into what you’re writing about. A well written story is memorable and it sticks in the mind of readers. It’s been like this for thousands of years. That is why storytelling is used so commonly in marketing.
Remember those stories your weird uncle would tell at family parties?
Well if you remember then the point is proven. Find ways to integrate your product or service into a story and tell it to your audience.
3. Subject Lines Matter
Subject lines are the first line of copy that someone will see if you’re sending them an email. These subject lines matter because if it’s uninspiring or a generic piece of copy then what makes you think someone will want to open that email?
It needs to hook the reader.
You need to grab their attention and make them want to open that email.
You want to make them feel like if they don’t open that email then they are going to regret it later. In a totally non-threatening way obvs!!
There are a few things you can do to improve the email subject line:
- Create urgency.
- Evoke curiosity.
- Personalise.
- Have an offer.
4. Avoid Long Paragraphs
When someone opens an email and sees that it’s a lengthy piece of content that’s going to take them an hour to decipher, there is 0% of them even beginning to even start to read it.
We live in a fast paced world where short snappy content has a better chance of converting. Use a few lines of content and space them out, making it as easy to follow for the reader as possible.
The less effort it takes the reader to read an email the better chance they have of converting.
5. Urgency & Scarcity Are Your Friends
The most tried and tested marketing techniques include using scarcity and urgency. When you use one of these methods you’re basically instilling FOMO (fear of missing out) into the reader.
Let’s look at an example.
Imagine you’re an avid comic book collector and there is a limited edition comic of your favourite superhero that has just been released.
Can you see where the urgency and scarcity technique has been used?
The words ‘limited edition’ are enough to let FOMO take over and get the reader to get out their credit card and make the purchase.
Why, you ask?
Because the fact that it is limited means that the offer will expire sooner rather than later. In email marketing don’t be afraid to use terms like this to try and persuade readers to take action.
6. Strong CTA’s
A CTA (call to action) is the mother of all marketing jargon. In any marketing material there will usually be a CTA thrown in there. Afterall, a CTA is ultimately what you want your reader to do, it’s the action you’re persuading them to take.
Whether that’s to opt in for a newsletter, or request a quote, or sign up for a deal. For this reason you want to make your CTA’s as enticing as possible. You can do this by:
- Using words that provoke emotion or enthusiasm.
- Using FOMO.
- Using strong verbs that are commanding.
- Ensuring the CTA button is clearly highlighted using designs and colour.
7.Ensure Mobile Optimisation
Let’s face it, we use our mobiles for absolutely everything now. Whether you’re watching a movie or spying on the postman using your doorbell, mobiles can do practically everything nowadays.
With this in mind, it’s vital that you make your emails fit for mobile use. Otherwise you run the risk of massively reducing your conversion rates.
The last thing you want to do is create the perfect email (by following our amazing tips of course) then realising it looks terrible when on mobile.
So what can you do to ensure this doesn’t happen?
- Ensure the subject line is within 30-35 characters if possible.
- Ensure copy is short and concise to benefit mobile viewing.
- Use larger fonts to improve readability.
- Reduce image sizes so that loading times are reduced.
